MESSAGE OF AMBASSADOR OF ARGENTINA REGARDING MAY 25TH REVOLUTION 1810

This year we celebrate the 210th Anniversary of Argentina’s May Revolution, the first independent Government in Buenos Aires which took place on May 25th 1810 “Día de la Revolución de Mayo”. This was the beginning not only of the independence of my country, but the seed that led in the following years to the independence of several countries in South America. This revolution proved to be the first step towards Argentina’s independence, it was the evolution of a sequence of political and social events in the old Port City of Buenos Aires during the early part of the nineteenth century which led to the first local government not designated by the Spanish Crown in the region known as the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, which at the time contained the present-day nations of Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay. In that revolution there was no violence involved, as Napoleon’s forces had taken momentarily over the Spanish Crown, it was due to these special circumstances the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata (Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata), including the Malvinas Islands, were no longer subservient to decisions taken by Spain in their name. Therefore it was this first step towards independence seamed certainly natural. Estanisla A. Zawels, Ambassador
